New England – Camping with Your Dogs – Best Experiences

First in what one hopes is a series

A Morning Walk on Sand Beach

This blogger had spend hours of research on possible campsites that offered accommodations for not one, but three dogs – in New England there were two. Most campsites offer “pet friendly” options, however, in reading the fine print, one finds that dogs must be on leash at all times, and are not allowed in certain areas of the campground (including any beach-sites), most are confined to one dog, no more, with specific leash lengths (6 feet being most common) – to this dog owner, hardly friendly. Finally, I happened upon Old Quarry Ocean Adventures, in historic Stonington, Maine. What to know: Multiple, well-behaved, dogs accepted off-leash with owners, self-contained property offering: sailing, boating, kayaking, hiking and yes, there are beaches nearby. They also boast a fine take-out service, with lobster dinners at extremely reasonable prices, lobster rolls one could die for, and a choice of “boxed” lunches, with assorted wraps, breakfasts, and the works! The campsites are large, limited to 13, with additional overflow” sites available. (RV Parking as well).

Excessive or prolonged barking is not appreciated, one should pick up after one’s dogs, and the alternative to not so well behaved dogs, is to keep them on leash if the tendency is to invade the neighbors campsite to visit and wreck mayhem with the neighbors dog(s). Sadly, for this blogger, that would describe my three troublemakers, however, leashed, they enjoyed themselves just the same. (They may have believed they were at a large dog-park, and wanted to mix it up a bit with new friends.)

Relaxing after a day walking about!

The beach – Sand beach, although dogs must be on-leash and picked up after, they are not restricted by hours – it is a beautiful haven, with a set of trails leading to breathtaking views, and a short drive from Old Quarry.

Stonington, Maine, is located east of Augusta, or Bangor, and the approximate drive-time from Massachusetts is 7 hours. The drive from the Maine Turnpike offers scenic vistas, grand mountain views of the bay and islands.

Having not camped in 30 some-odd years, let alone with three dogs, the time spent at Old Quarry Ocean Adventures was one of the best vacations experienced. Rating AAA – for the food, the activities and the treatment of one’s best friends.
